Description
Real-time monitoring of rainfall through rain gauges enables operations personnel to be alerted about potential flooding or sewer overflow situations. By closely tracking and evaluating precipitation levels at various sites, it becomes possible to estimate rainfall in areas that are not directly monitored, a method known as the “Distributed Rainfall Modelling Technique” (DRMT). The integration of rainfall radar data with readings from rain gauges facilitates the creation of enhanced rainfall coverage maps. Furthermore, examining historical rainfall data helps in constructing rainfall intensity-duration curves, which can be compared to the design intensity-duration-frequency curves of the region, aiding in the identification of return periods for recorded events through forensic analysis. In addition, new intensity-duration-frequency curves can be generated to inform the design of drainage infrastructure, including sewers, channels, and storage facilities. Continuous flow monitoring, coupled with data analysis, contributes to the development of rainfall versus stormwater runoff response curves, which are essential for calibrating drainage system models effectively. This comprehensive approach ensures that urban planning and flood management strategies are well-informed and responsive to actual conditions.
Description
MODRET is a user-friendly interactive software designed to compute both unsaturated and saturated infiltration losses from stormwater retention and detention ponds situated in unconfined aquifers, utilizing a modified version of MODFLOW. In addition to its primary function, it offers several distinctive features: it can create single watershed stormwater runoff hydrographs by employing methods such as the SCS unit hydrograph, Rational method, and Santa Barbara urban hydrograph, while also providing a graphical representation of the outcomes. Furthermore, MODRET allows for the routing of these hydrographs—whether generated by the software or sourced from elsewhere—through the infiltration losses of ponds and the creation of infiltration-routed hydrographs. The software also enables users to specify various overflow devices, including weirs and orifices, along with rating curves for the ponds, facilitating the calculations of total volume and peak discharge rates. Additionally, MODRET can generate detailed graphics depicting groundwater elevation cross-sections, complete with ZOOM functionality for enhanced viewing. It also produces XYZ data files, which can be utilized by other applications such as SURFER and AutoCAD to create groundwater contour maps and three-dimensional surfaces, making it a comprehensive tool for hydrological analysis. This versatility makes MODRET an essential program for professionals working in environmental engineering and water resource management.
